Four Fabulous Sarasota Golf Communities To Consider
By Howie Munson
Scotland is recognized as the home of the game of golf, so it seems fitting that the game arrived in Florida due to a planned Scot colony. The manager of the company, John Hamilton Gillespie constructed a two-hole course around 1886. By 1905, he had built another course that sprawled over more than 100 acres and featured nine holes. Other golfing clubs quickly appeared. Today, choosing four fabulous Sarasota golf communities is difficult due to the plethora of possible selections.
If you want to live on the links, you can find choices ranging from estates in gated neighborhoods to more modest family-oriented communities. Some have units that vacationing tourists can rent, while others allow only private homes. Clubhouses, pools, and tennis courts are standard.
The Meadows is a 1,650-acre planned community with approximately 3,400 homes. Choices in residences range from condominiums to villas and from single-family to garden homes. The natural setting has 80 waterways and lakes, trails for biking or walking, and nature preserves. Central to the community is a shopping village with a bank, restaurants, stores, boutiques, dentist and a travel agency. Three courses range between par 65 and par 72. There are also 16 tennis courts, a fitness center, and a pool.
Lakewood Ranch encompasses around 8,500 acres, with homes that run the gamut from townhomes to million-dollar estates. Three 18-hole courses, 9 polo fields and tennis courts offer residents a variety of choices. There are also shopping, dining, and health care facilities.
Heritage Oaks has private homes as well as rentals for vacation use. Homes include villas, condos, luxury duplexes, and traditional single-family dwellings. The course is 18 holes with a 10th hole snack bar. There are four heated pools, tennis courts, and scenic walking trails for those who prefer other activities. Residents can have dinner or lunch at the clubhouse.
Bent Tree offers moderately prices condos and single-family homes, as well as larger estates in the Woodlands, a gated community within Bent Tree. The clubhouse offers fine and casual dining choices. Residents are not required to join the country club. If they do, they can access all of the club’s benefits. The golf course is 18 holes and a par 72, and was renovated in 2010.
The mild climate allows golfers to play virtually year-round. Sarasota lies on Florida’s Gulf Coast, in the southwestern part of the state. The city encompasses several keys, or barrier islands. Lido and Siesta Keys are famous for their beachfronts. Bird Key is known as one of the most prestigious areas on the western coast of Florida.

Great article, will definitely have to check out some of those golf courses next time I’m staying in Sarasota!
Everyone always thinks of the Sarasota properties, but there are quite a few other golf courses on the surrounding Keys that are good to consider as well!
