When health professionals and nursing professionals work with the elderly on a daily basis, their primary concern is to keep the elderly moving and active. Activity keeps their mental capacity sharp. When the elderly work with dogs, there so many tasks that need to be accomplished that takes the focus off of any health ailments or loneliness, and puts it on to the care of the dog. A dog is a friendly and loving animal, and has a lot to give to the elderly person who needs something to do with their time besides sitting or lying around.
Doing voluntary work with dogs gives the elderly a sense of purpose. One of the most common feelings that the elderly have, is that they don’t have a sense of purpose. They might feel like their purpose was to be a mother or father, or to be a spouse. After a certain point in time these roles have been filled, and the elderly might feel like there’s nothing else for them to do. This can be compounded if they find that their friends are gravely ill, or have passed away. However when the elderly works with the dog, it gives them something to look forward to on a daily basis.
