Tips For Using Tax Software
By Jared Brown
If there’s anything remotely as confounding as filing taxes, it would be the task of choosing the tax software. It can be free or paid, desktop or online, for individuals or businesses and corporations, and easy to use or complex. The choice has to be made based essentially on the complexity of the filing needs.
For starters, the easy solution for filing needs that are very basic is to use free e-file. It’s good enough for a 1040EZ filing with no mortgages, medical expenses, childcare, etc. These are free programs provided by the IRS in partnership with prominent software companies.
It’s very basic, though, and doesn’t include state filing (there’s a fee for state filings). But filing is simple and the turnaround time is fast. Some of these free programs provide a return in eight days for those who accept returns with a direct deposit.
Even though they’re free, users still have access to a whole bunch of tools and support from the companies, such as walk-through videos, audit support centers and deduction helpers. If a user still finds it hard to complete the filing with the free version, it’s always possible to upgrade on the spot and continue with the filing using the premium version. There still remains, however, the question of which one of the programs to use.
The simple answer is to use the same program that was used last year. Most programs will only be able to import and use data from the past year if it was filed using the same program. Also, if the filing is very complex and the taxpayer in question is not adept at using computer programs, it’s worth considering hiring a CPA.
But it’s not usually much of an issue, and every person and company will find tax software that is just about right for their filing needs. All that’s required is for the person doing it to know how to use the program. This is one more reason why it’s better to find one program that can handle the filing, and use the same one every year.
If you actively trade stocks, bonds, options, mutual funds, or single-stock futures and have ever attempted to report these to the IRS, then you know what a headache it can be. TradeLog software can greatly reduce the time and work involved in reporting your finances. To learn more about their investment tax software check out their free trial offer.
