Medical Center Tempts Rural Nurses

By

The Medical Center, at the University of Kansas, has provided the nurses of the Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital, Ulysses an opportunity to better their nursing skills. The nurses of those rural hospitals with very few patients will be traveling to the Kansas hospital. Kansas City for short time work through a program that has been recently started by medical center. The medical center which is short of nurses recruits them and provides them an opportunity to deal with the cases that they do not frequently deal with.

Till date, only Ulysses hospital with 35 beds is a part of the program. 12 out of a total of 26 nurses of the hospital were interested in participating in this program. Many nurses, who have already been to the medical center work for 3-4 days in eight to twelve hour shifts.

It is an exciting opportunity according to a registered nurse, who is 35 years old and has been working in Ulysses for the previous five years. After she flew to Kansas City, she was assigned to take care of the kidney, bone marrow and liver transplant patients and the hematology unit. The medical center’s outreach plane takes these nurses to the Kansas City and they stay at the medical center.

Administrator, Bob Wilson Hospital says that there is a lot of potential in the program not only for his hospital but for the neighborhood hospitals too. This is an opportunity for them to work at an advanced level of nursing care; and also with advanced equipment.

He said that with the initiation of this program, the entire nursing staff will be benefited with the nurses who participate while the nurses in turn get to experience the state of the art care which enhances patient care. And that is a big gain. The director of nursing services at the medical center also added that the purpose of the program is twofold. It helps alleviate the nursing shortage at the medical center, and at the same time enables hard working nurses to enhance their skills and get full time work.

And it was surprising to see how well they fit in. According to her, all they required were some instructions, and they did rather well; as they are basically good workers. The staff at the center has welcomed them with open arms. The program can’t be successful without the outreach plane which has a capacity of seven as it takes the doctors out to conduct seminars.

Nurses frequently drive to Kansas City from Manhattan, Fort Scott, Paola and Topeka for part time work at the medical center. The Kansas City medical center allows two to three to fly back at one time. The trips that are made to the eastern regions need to be well planned but it is really worth the effort says a passenger who has been a nurse for three years at Ulysses.

She is willing to go again even though it a lot of planning and thinking ahead of time. The nurse who is a mother of two children, aged 8 and fourteen, supports her and want a bright career for her. She hopes that they will soon reap the benefits of that education which they might be able to use back home efficiently.
