Use Business Networking To Grow Your Business
By Bryan Samac
Face-to-face business networking can be a fundamental strategy to create new opportunities for selling your company’s product and services. More and more entrepreneurs joining the marketplace on a daily basis, so what you do to “get the word out” about your business offering is key to carving out your place in the marketplace. For most small business owners, proper networking skills are necessary for their continued existence and success.
A key benefit of networking is referrals. You’ll find it so much simpler to convert a potential customer into a client if you have already been recommended by a shared connection.
A successful business networker has these four components in their make-up to create and maintain a referral network:
1) A One-Minute Story. Also often called the elevator speech, this is your one-minute introduction to your services, a primary distinguishing advantage, and what you seeking for in the way of clients. There are various on-line tools that take you step-by-step through the development of your message. Make your story memorable, conversational and personal.
2) A Target Audience. To connect with like-minded company owners, become a member of two to three business organizations. Your neighborhood probably has a Chamber of Commerce as an excellent means to connect with your business neighbours, as are organizations that have been specifically created in order to allow small businesses of all sorts to share in business opportunities.
3) Approach. If you’re looking to generate referrals, you have to prepare yourself to provide referrals in return. This means is being a good listener and engaged in knowing what your fellow business entrepreneur is offering and what exactly they are looking for client-wise. You need to be actively thinking of who in your business network could possibly reap some benefits from that service. An important positive side effect, when setting your state of mind in the position of wanting to assist, is that telling your own story will become far less difficult – your conversations with others become authentic conversations, not sales pitches directed at each other.
4) Following up. With a brand new connection, you have the opportunity to expand on the relationship. Use the Internet to send a thank-you e-mail recalling a point specific to your shared conversation, locate them on Linked-In and ask to become a link. If you have a news letter in your marketing and advertising toolbox, inquire if they would like to be on your e-newsletter distribution list.
Through meeting and connecting with like-minded business owners and other service professionals, business networking can be fun and educational – who knows, you may develop a new friend or two!
