Building Values, Building Great Construction Business

By

If you want to run an effective construction business, then you have to put in a lot of work and constantly assess the business. Finance, infrastructure, equipment, insurance, and marketing to name a few are important considerations in running a stellar business, but if you can improve every aspect of the business, then your business could improve from mediocre to extraordinary!

Because there is an overwhelming number of things to consider, perhaps the easiest way to improve all aspects of your business all at once is to create a list of core values. Mission statements and core values certainly boost public relations and company direction, but more importantly, they provide ethical standards for your entire business to act by. Instead of talking about greatness, make your business be great with a set of core values.

Undoubtedly, to be great, you must set exceptional standards. When you set high expectations, all aspects of your company will actually conform to these ideals. So, we’ve set out to demonstrate how certain core values will build your business up in the building industry.

Safety. We all know the importance of safety in the construction industry, and it may be the most important value of the market. Along with protecting your company and avoiding liability, your company should strive to make your customers feel safe, and as a result, they will comfortably trust you to do the job correctly. Think “safety first,” and your resulting track record will boost customer confidence in the long-run.

Quality Service. This seems obvious, of course, but quality means more than merely abiding industrial standards. Quality service asks you to set yourself apart from your competitors. Don’t just do what’s required, go out of your way to serve your customers.

Innovation. Although budget may restrict you from buying into cutting-edge technology, any improvements you can make to your equipment, service, or management will elicit higher efficiency. Make it a priority to study the market, research new methods in the industry, and apply them to your particular fields. This will give you an edge on your competitors, and again, make you stand out in your market.

Continuous Improvement. You can always make room for improvement, right? To improve your company, it’s very important to incessantly evaluate the internal processes of your business. You will do more than just cut costs and save time, but you will also fine-tune your infrastructure by bettering services, efficiency, and customer satisfaction. If you review your company’s performance and all customer critique, then this regular introspection will turn you into a market leader.

Fairness. Honesty, transparency, and fairness are all virtues you should strive for with your customers, employees, and vendors. You should not make your fairness very rigid either; by that, I mean forgiveness and compassion towards others will build trust and respect. Stay true to your word, provide fair prices, and pay your employees well. Virtue works just as well in the business world as it does in personal affairs.

Profit with a Purpose. Without profits, the future of your company would be grim indeed. However, when you do make money, you should invest it shrewdly to ensure the continuing life and well-being of the business.

But perhaps you should consider why you are profiting? In addition to building the company, you should consider other things as well.

Employees are the force behind your projects, so you may consider rewarding them for their hard work. Increasing benefits for your workers really provides incentive for them to work hard, remain loyal to the company, and believe in their work.

Likewise, you may think about charitable contributions. In doing so, you reap tax-deductions for your business, but more importantly, you can provide for the less-fortunate, the sick, the homeless, and others in need. Profiting with a purpose moves your company towards something greater than just the work you do, and charity will increase your success, physically and spiritually.

The bottom line remains: core values shape everything your company is and does. Construct positive foundations for your company to act by, set exceptional goals, and as a result, you will base your company in greatness and move it toward greater and greater business.
